about

There’s a lot going on in this waltz. The vocals at the end I find a bit embarrassing, but if you’re going to record everything in a ruthless hour then you can’t be too precious I suppose. This is probably my favourite song on the album, lyrics wise, and I like how insistent it sounds. The “sent our team to the retail park” referenced my friend Geoff’s beloved York City, who are moving from their beautiful Bootham Crescent, surrounded by terraced houses and a short walk to the station, to some soulless commercial estate on the edge of town you have to drive to.

I think the rest is pretty obvious for a song written in January. “Soothed by virtual gardening” is probably a reference to Stardew Valley, “trying hard” is the hardest thing, and an imbecilic speech by Victorian Cosplayer Jacob Rees Mogg sadly also makes an appearance.

This song was initially entitled “Disco Sailing”, for reasons I absolutely cannot fathom.

All The Fish Are Now English

In wintry cold weather
Planting seeds in the dark
Soothed by virtual gardening
Trying hard is an art

But there’s so much time burning
And I’m fine I insist
Can I return my old books
If libraries still exist

Undercutting G4S
All our hopes got outsourced
Sent our team to the retail park
We’re all newly divorced

Too soon to take notice
Been processing for years
All the fish are now English
Moving up through the tiers

about

James Walsh London, UK

James wrote his first song in 2009, when his then partner bought him a ukulele for his 30th birthday. He wrote a song about Laika, the first dog in space, and then got distracted by other things. This is his first attempt to write a coherent album of songs, but now this particular monkey is off his back he hopes to write a second album before the year is out. ... more
